Colombia President Refuses to Accept Election Results – What’s Next

Game Theory Today · Short · 1:49 · Published 2026-07-11 on YouTube

Colombia has a president who lost an election and won’t leave. Gustavo Petro is refusing to recognize the victory of president-elect Abelardo de la Espriella, alleging — without publishing evidence — that an Israeli firm hacked the vote, and de la Espriella suspended the transition on July 7. The headlines call it a constitutional crisis. Here’s the board underneath it: the DEA has designated Petro a “priority target,” and federal prosecutors in Brooklyn and Manhattan are questioning traffickers about his alleged ties to them. He denies all of it, and the case is early-stage and unproven — but for the game we’re analyzing, his guilt isn’t the variable that matters.

What matters is the payoff structure. For most outgoing presidents, leaving office costs you a motorcade. For a president under foreign criminal investigation, the presidency is immunity, command of the security services, and control over who gets extradited — all of which vanish the day he hands over the sash. And the man he’d hand it to is close to the worst possible custodian of that file: de la Espriella is a naturalized U.S. citizen with a home in Miami, Trump’s endorsement, and a past life as Alex Saab’s attorney. Political scientists call this the loser’s dilemma — when losing power means prison, incumbents stop leaving voluntarily. So don’t take the fraud claim at face value, and don’t just wave it away. Watch the variables. Does the fraud allegation ever arrive with evidence, or only with delay? Who benefits from the transition simply not happening on schedule? And the one that actually decides it: who do the soldiers and police obey? Inauguration is due August 7. And if anyone thinks a well-defended capital is a guarantee — ask Nicolás Maduro, who was inside Fuerte Tiuna in the morning and on a U.S. warship by nightfall.
