Trump’s UN Speech Was a Big Deal

President Trump told the 81st United Nations General Assembly on September 22, 2026, that he has “a big decision to make” on Iran: a deal that lets Iran rebuild, or ending the Islamic Republic quickly. He predicted a deal “right after the election,” said the United States has “more munitions than we could ever possibly even think of using,” and said 18 munitions plants are under construction. On September 14, the Pentagon’s acquisition office told the Defense Department’s Lead Inspector General that Operation Epic Fury had produced “strategic inventory shortfalls.” The IG estimated the operation’s cost at $33.4 billion through June 29, $22.3 billion of it in expended munitions. Since August, the Pentagon has signed seven-year framework agreements to triple PAC-3 MSE and quadruple THAAD interceptor production. After the speech, Trump, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and Greenland Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen signed a trilateral security agreement with no end date. It expands the U.S. military presence on Greenland, allows a Golden Dome missile-defense system there, and keeps the island under Danish control.

The obvious objection is that the speech oversold both the arsenal and the economy. The inspector general’s finding cuts against the munitions claim, and real GDP grew 1.5 percent last quarter. The game-theory point survives both. A side losing a war of attrition plays for time, waiting for the other side to run short of votes, weapons, or money. The speech was aimed at all three. It promised a deal after the midterms, pointed to production lines contracted for seven years rather than one season, and described a war whose cost through June came to roughly one-tenth of one percent of a $30 trillion economy. Iran’s president addresses the same chamber on September 23. The question is whose clock Tehran thinks is running out.
