New Jersey’s Voter Roll Error Is a Point for Trump

The Governor of New Jersey, Mikie Sherrill, disclosed that a software error at the state’s Motor Vehicle Commission registered roughly 6,600 noncitizens to vote between June 2023 and June 2024 — people who pressed “not a citizen” on the DMV keypad and were registered anyway. Fewer than 400 cast ballots, spread across Democrats, Republicans, and unaffiliated voters, and the registrations are being purged. The question everyone is asking — crisis or scandal? — is the wrong question.

This is a move in an ongoing strategic game over election legitimacy, and on this move Trump scored. Not because 400 scattered, error-caused votes changed anything — they didn’t, and the state says as much — but because a Democratic governor and former federal prosecutor had to concede, on the record, ground the GOP has been claiming for a decade. New Jersey had been fighting a Justice Department lawsuit to keep its voter file private; within a day of the disclosure, Assistant Attorney General Harmeet Dhillon said the error is “an additional basis” to force the rolls open. The next move — pressuring every state that auto-registers voters at the DMV to audit its own system — is already underway. Trump never needed to prove mass fraud; he needs a drip of official admissions that shifts the frame. This is what that looks like.
