Cuban Elites Are Telling Kids to Fight Delta Force. The Last Man Who Said That Is in Brooklyn.
On Russian state television, Mariela Castro Espín — daughter of Raúl Castro — called the Cuban people to zafarrancho de combate, battle stations, and addressed the United States directly: “Vengan, los estamos esperando.” Come, we’re waiting for you. The last leader to dare Washington like that was Nicolás Maduro. On January 3, 2026, the Army’s Delta Force assaulted Fuerte Tiuna — Venezuela’s largest military complex — and captured him. Thirty-two Cuban special forces guarding Maduro were killed; not one American was killed (seven were wounded). Maduro is now jailed in New York, indicted for narco-terrorism.
The easy objection is that Cuba has been defiant for 65 years and is still standing — and routine defiance is noise. What’s different is the sequence: Maduro removed, Raúl Castro indicted, GAESA sanctioned, the ruling family’s U.S. exit revoked, and then the battle-stations rhetoric. Maximalist defiance from a position of options is posture; defiance after the off-ramps close reads differently. Note also what Mariela Castro is not: she is not on the OFAC sanctions list, and she has entered the United States on a diplomatic visa as recently as 2025 — calling on young Cubans to die fighting the country she travels to. This is a pattern read, not a forecast of any specific outcome. Three things tell you how Havana actually reads the moment: whether the war footing becomes verifiable mobilization or stays rhetoric on a Russian broadcast, where the regime’s money moves next, and who it puts forward to negotiate.
