Two Entertainment Legends Meet at the White House
Donald Trump has roughly twenty-five screen credits, a Golden Raspberry for Worst Supporting Actor in the 1990 film “Ghosts Can’t Do It,” a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and fourteen seasons of “The Apprentice” as host and producer between 2004 and 2015. Volodymyr Zelenskyy founded Kvartal 95 Studio in 2003, built it into the largest production house in Ukraine, won Ukraine’s “Dancing with the Stars” in 2006, voiced Paddington Bear in Ukrainian, and starred in “Servant of the People” — a series about a teacher who accidentally becomes president — for three seasons before his production company registered a political party under the show’s name and he won the 2019 election with 73.22 percent.
Two heads of state met at the White House this morning at 9:30. Between them they hold about forty screen credits and two Emmy nominations, and nobody covering the meeting mentioned it once. The comparison is not a joke at either man’s expense — it is the most useful fact on the table. One of them spent twenty-five years appearing as himself. The other spent twenty-five years writing, producing, and performing other people, and owned the distribution. When two professional entertainers sit down in a room full of cameras, the meeting has two audiences, and only one of them is in the room. Which one is each man playing to?
