The U.S. Put Weapons In Space and Russia Did Nothing
On September 14, 2026, Secretary of the Air Force Troy Meink told the Air & Space Forces Association conference in National Harbor that the United States has on-orbit space control weapons. No system was named, no capability described. He took questions and left. The same day, the Treasury Department designated Russia’s VTB Bank under Executive Order 13902 for Iranian sanctions evasion — the fourth-largest action in Operation Economic Outcast since the campaign opened on August 24.
Fifteen years ago, VTB put $191 million into the offshore vehicle that financed nearly half of a Russian fund’s stake in Twitter, while Gazprom Investholding money went into Facebook. In 2006 Russia hosted the G8. From 2011 to 2020 the United States had no way to put a human in orbit and paid Moscow up to $90 million per Soyuz seat.
The obvious objection is that none of this is new — Russia fired a projectile from one of its own satellites in July 2020, per U.S. Space Command, and vetoed a 2024 Security Council resolution that restated the existing ban on nuclear weapons in orbit. That’s true, and it cuts the other way. The question isn’t whether Washington is entitled to do this. It’s what it means that the announcement cost nothing: no summit, no negotiation, no concession. In 1986 at Reykjavik, the price of American weapons in space was the abolition of nuclear weapons, and Reagan wouldn’t pay it. What changed between then and now is not the technology. It’s who has leverage.
