Marjorie Taylor Greene’s Old Boss Arrested in Spain

An American millionaire was arrested in Spain on Friday for funding a campaign of attacks inside the United States. The coverage is going to sort itself into two camps immediately — political persecution, or terrorist financier finally caught. Both camps will skip the document. So here’s the board, in order, with the rules underneath it.
James “Fergie” Chambers is an heir to the Cox Enterprises fortune. He took a payout estimated at a quarter billion dollars and spent it trying to bring down the country that produced it. He founded a Marxist-Leninist collective in western Massachusetts. He praises Stalin, Mao, and Vladimir Putin. He spent years living in Russia and married into a Russian family. And in 2012, before any of it, he owned a CrossFit gym in Alpharetta, Georgia — where one of his employees was a woman named Marjorie Taylor Greene.
It got serious after October 7, 2023. Prosecutors say Chambers financed a campaign of direct action against Elbit Systems of America — the U.S. arm of the Israeli defense firm — running from October 2023 to April 2025. Young activists set off smoke bombs inside an occupied office building in New Hampshire. Chambers paid their bail. They served two months. Then he left the country for Tunisia, which has no extradition treaty with the United States. He was already under FBI investigation when he went.

On Friday morning, Spanish police took him on Ibiza. A Spanish judge denied him bail.

Now look at what the Justice Department actually charged: international money laundering, riot, and conspiracy to riot. Not terrorism. Not material support. And here is why that matters — the organization he founded and funded, Unity of Fields, formerly Palestine Action US, is not a designated Foreign Terrorist Organization. It is not an SDGT. This administration hasn’t designated it. Nobody has. Which means the government could not charge material support even if it wanted to. So it charged the wire instead of the creed.

That is the shape of American power right now. You don’t need a designation. You need a bank record.

Two things to watch. First: whether Spain actually hands him over. The extradition goes to the Audiencia Nacional — a court in the country that recognized Palestine, refused us basing rights for strikes on Iran, and was told by the President of the United States last week to expect a total trade cutoff. His lawyers will argue political offense, and the President’s own words are their best exhibit. Second: on July 16, Secretary Rubio convenes ministers from more than sixty nations in Washington on what State is calling transnational far-left terrorism. Chambers is the first live test of that project — and it’s being tested on charges that carefully avoid the word.

Why should you care? Because the network around him is not marginal. The fund that moves his money is administered by a co-chair of the Democratic Socialists of America’s International Committee. One of the young women he bailed out later turned up in Tehran calling for the destruction of this country. The DSA is surging in American electoral politics right now. The question this prosecution actually poses is how far these cases go — and whether the law follows where the rhetoric already is.
