Trump Changed the Middle East Permanently—Despite What They Said

The analysts said Trump had no strategy. They were modeling the wrong variable.
In January, the Maduro regime in Venezuela was decapitated in a two-and-a-half-hour military operation. Cuba is now under a US fuel blockade with explicit regime-change objectives by year-end. In February, the United States and Israel killed Iran’s Supreme Leader and degraded its military capability. This week, the United Arab Emirates walked out of OPEC, Qatar ended its support for Hamas, the Iranian regime is decapitated and fractured, and the British monarch is in Washington inspecting American troops on the 250th anniversary of American independence.
This is not chaos. This is the application of Alexander Wendt’s Constructivist international relations theory — anarchy is what states make of it — by an American president for the first time since 1945. The strategic order built after 1979 is over. What replaces it is being constructed in real time, and America is the architect.
