Putin Is Burning the Fortress. Russia’s Gold Reserve Sale Is a Signal.
Since January 2026, the Russian Central Bank has sold roughly 22 tons of physical gold from its reserves — the first real market sale of bullion since 2002. Russia’s Q1 federal deficit hit $61 billion as oil and gas revenues collapsed. At the same time, the head of Russia’s official Communist Party is warning of a 1917-style revolution, and Vladimir Putin just renamed the FSB Academy after Felix Dzerzhinsky, founder of the Soviet secret police.
Putin is not finished. “Russia is collapsing” has been wrong for a quarter-century. But the 2014 Fortress Russia doctrine was supposed to sanction-proof the regime against exactly this kind of revenue squeeze — and Moscow is now burning the reserve it built for that purpose.
The endless war in Ukraine and the disruption to Russian oil revenue and dirty money flows are taking a documentable toll. The question is what comes next — and whether Washington ratchets the pressure or gives Putin a quiet reprieve while it consolidates its own hemisphere.
