John Bolton Career Lowlights
John Bolton agreed today to plead guilty to one federal count of unlawful retention of national defense information. The former National Security Advisor was indicted in October 2025 on 18 counts in the U.S. District Court for the District of Maryland; the agreement carries a fine of more than $2.25 million, with the plea set to be entered June 26.
Bolton spent years as a cable-news expert and a vocal Trump critic. In a June 12, 2023 NPR interview he said that, if proven at trial, Trump’s handling of classified material should “put Trump in jail for a long time,” adding that “we have to hold everyone accountable equally — and that does not exclude the president.” This reel walks his record back four decades: the Reagan Justice Department during Iran-Contra, the Project for the New American Century and the case for the 2003 Iraq War, and his super PAC’s early 2014 contract with Cambridge Analytica. The question isn’t whether Bolton was right about the standard. It’s whether the standard now applies to him.
