No, Israel Is Not Taking Over the Pentagon
On May 26, 2026, the House Armed Services Committee released its chairman’s mark of the FY2027 National Defense Authorization Act (H.R. 8800), and buried inside is Section 224 — the “U.S.–Israel Defense Technology Cooperation Initiative.” The text covers co-production of weapons, joint research, licensing, and shared data: industrial and R&D cooperation, the same category as Iron Dome, scaled up. Within three days it had been written up by the Quincy Institute’s Responsible Statecraft (May 29) as a move to “fuse the two countries’ armed forces,” picked up by Al Jazeera and TRT under an “integration” frame (May 30), and pushed downstream into “merge the militaries — with Israel leading” and a YouTube short claiming the two armies “merge in 2027.” Somewhere in that chain, the word “industrial” got dropped.
Here’s the distinction that the rumor erases: industrial integration is not operational command. A foreign country cannot take command of U.S. forces through a procurement provision — command runs through the President, the Secretary of Defense, and the combatant commands under Title 10, and nothing in Section 224 touches that chain. The honest, debatable story is real but narrower: Section 224 would shift the U.S.–Israel relationship from an aid model toward an acquisition-and-integration model — harder to see, harder to condition, harder to unwind, and arguably in some respects more accountable. And it’s base text: nobody has voted on it. The committee marks it up Thursday, June 4, where members including Ro Khanna and Thomas Massie have signaled they’ll try to strike it. Watch the amendment log — that’s where the fingerprints show up.
