Hostile Spies Recruit Our Kids
Calla Walsh, 22, of Cambridge, Massachusetts, appeared this week at the state funeral of Iran’s supreme leader — her third trip to Iran since July 2025, each hosted by Iranian state broadcasting, an entity on the U.S. Treasury’s SDN sanctions list since February 6, 2013. Before that: four trips to Cuba between 2022 and 2024 with the Venceremos Brigade, hosted by ICAP — the organization the State Department calls Havana’s “premier influence and intelligence front group in the United States.” In between: a November 2023 attack on defense contractor Elbit Systems in Merrimack, New Hampshire — 60 days in jail, $95,000 in restitution. In 2021 she was a 17-year-old writing for Teen Vogue, profiled by The New York Times, volunteering in Massachusetts Democratic politics.
None of her speech is a crime — the First Amendment protects all of it, and that’s not the issue. The issue is the pipeline: politically precocious teenagers elevated to national visibility, then systematically cultivated by hostile intelligence services through friendship organizations, hosted delegations, and sanctioned state media. Counterterrorism officials told The Free Press she could face indictment if she returns to the United States. The question worth watching: how many more names are in that same public catalog — and who is reading it.
